Since 1984 Frans H. van Eemeren is Professor of Speech Communication, Argumentation Theory and Rhetoric in the University of Amsterdam. He is head of Department and director of the research program ¿Argumentation and Discourse¿, the research master program ¿Rhetoric, Argumentation theory and Philosophy¿ (RAP) of the Graduate School Humanities and the PhD program ¿Argumentation in Discourse.¿ Van Eemeren is a former Dean of the Faculty of Letters and the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Amsterdam and a former Chairman of the Institute for Functional Research of Language and Language Use. He is Distinguished Scholar of the National Communication Association of the United States, Fulbright Professor, and chairman of the International Society for the Study of Argumentation (ISSA), Editor-in-Chief of the journal Argumentation and Springer¿s Argumentation Library.
Van Eemeren developed together with Rob Grootendorst the pragma-dialectical theory of argumentation. Among his book publications in English are: (with Grootendorst) Speech Acts in Argumentative Discussions (1984), Argumentation, Communication and Fallacies (1992), and A Systematic Theory of Argumentation (2004), (with Grootendorst, Jackson and Jacobs) Reconstructing Argumentative Discourse (1993), (with other prominent argumentation scholars) Fundamentals of Argumentation Theory (1996), (with Houtlosser) Dialectic and Rhetoric (2002), (with Houtlosser and Snoeck Henkemans) Argumentative Indicators in Discourse (2007). Several of these books have been translated in Chinese, French, Italian, Russian, Spanish and other languages. In 2007, the research program ¿Argumentation in Discourse¿ led by van Eemeren was judged ¿excellent¿ bythe international assessment committee that evaluated the quality of research in the Dutch universities.
È ordinario di Comunicazione verbale, di Teoria dell´argomentazione e di Retorica alla Universiteit van Amsterdam, dove è pure direttore di dipartimento nonché direttore del programma di ricerca ´Argomentazione nel discorso´ alla Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis. È stato Decano della Faculty of Arts e della Faculty of Humanities della medesima Università, e fondatore di ISSA (International Society for Studies in Argumentation). Insieme a Rob Grootendorst ha fondato la teoria pragma-dialettica dell´argomentazione. È editor-in-chief della rivista ´Argumentation´ e della collana ´Argumentation Library´, edite da Springer.
