Eligibility for applying to the PhD Program in Lingua, letteratura e civiltà Italiana
Master's degree in Italian language and literature (or an equivalent university degree) with a final score which is above average when compared to the applicant's peer group (For instance, in case of the Swiss Italian system, above 8/10) is required. Applicants who are not from Switzerland should provide proof of their final score relative to the peer group via written confirmation from their host institute.

Admission Process
The candidate has to present the following documents to the Istituto di studi italiani secretary (dottorato.isi.com@usi.ch):

  • Outline of the research project the candidate intends to develop, including bibliographical references (5-6 pages in total);
  • A CV fully documenting his/her university and secondary education, previous career etc;
  • One copy of Master's certificate, and a complete list of exams and corresponding evaluations;
  • One copy of the master's thesis and publications if any;
  • Work experience certifications, if any;
  • Two recommendation letters, signed by either university professors or field experts;
  • Short declaration of motivation and objectives for choosing a PhD program.

Research project proposals and CVs are evaluated twice a year by the Istituto di studi Italiani, so they need to be handed in by:

  • November 30th to be evaluated during the Collegio Docenti ISI meeting the following January;
  • April 30th to be evaluated during the Collegio Docenti ISI meeting the following June;

Once the candidates have been approved, the Collegio Docenti will choose a supervisor for them from among the institute's faculty. The candidate is then proposed to the Doctoral Committee and later to the Consiglio di Facoltà for their formal approval.
