Course description

Goals

Goal of this course is to provide PhD students and teaching assistants of the Faculties of Economics and Communication Sciences at USI with a basic training on Teaching and Learning at the Bachelor and Master levels. That competence will integrate their competences in research, with a significant benefit for their future academic career.
At the end of the course participants will:

  1. know basic notions of pedagogy and didactics and their implications for the teaching practice
  2. be able to consistently design teaching activities with a proper selection of teaching strategies
  3. be able to effectively run teaching activities
  4. be able to design and run effective evaluations of teaching activities
  5. be more aware of the learning/teaching dynamics

Course Structure

The workload for participants will be 28 hours:

  • 20 hours of classes
  • 4 hours of individual work for the design of instructional units
  • 4 hours of coaching (2 sessions of 2 hours each):
    • one session aimed at coaching on students’ projects
    • one session aimed at monitoring and evaluating the teaching skills of participants during a class activity

The course will be designed around practical activities, such as case study presentations, analysis of videotaped lectures and analysis of teaching materials.
Part of the entire module will be designed to fit specific needs of teaching Economics and Management as well as to teach Communication (during these hours, the class will be divided into two groups).
The class will be composed by no more than 15 students.
The following topics will be addressed in the course:

I class: Principles of teaching and learning

  • Presentation of the course, the teachers and the students
  • Theoretical foundations: education and communication, basic notions of knowledge and learning theory.

II class: Course and class design

  • Design of learning objectives and content selection
  • Selecting an instructional strategy and designing learning activities
  • Design of instructional materials
  • Tutoring
  • Evaluation

III class: Classroom management

  • Class management (face-to-face lessons) and public speaking
  • Visualization techniques
  • Integration of ICT into teaching activities

IV class: Subject-specific teaching
For this session the class is divided into two groups, according to faculty in which students teach. Each group will have an area-specific session of 3 hours, covering the following topics:

  • Content selection
  • Design of instructional materials
  • Design of case studies
  • Exercises, testing and evaluation
  • Connection between research and practice

V class: Presentation of the projects developed by students and debriefing
