Truth Under Attack: Press Freedom Today. Three short films and a discussion.
Institute of Media and Journalism
Date: 4 May 2026 / 20:00 - 22:00
Auditorium, West Campus, USI
What is the state of health of the media? On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, the Institute of Media and Journalism (IMeG), organises a public event to reflect not only on the condition of the information sector, but also on the health of democracy itself.
In a global context marked by conflict, geopolitical tensions, and growing polarization, disinformation has become a true weapon of war – an instrument central to many of the conflicts shaping our time. Defending press freedom therefore means reflecting on the role of information in documenting reality, countering manipulation, and ensuring citizens’ access to reliable and independent news.
To open the evening, three short films presented at the latest edition of the DIG (Documentaries, Investigations, Journalism) Festival in Modena will take us to three places that have become symbols of violations of fundamental freedoms, including the freedom to report on world events: the Gaza Strip, Hong Kong, and Iran.
Following the screenings, Philip Di Salvo, media researcher, lecturer at the University of St. Gallen, and member of the DIG Festival steering committee, will engage in conversation with journalist Natascia Bandecchi.
The event is organised by IMeG, specifically Dr. Laura Amigo and Prof. Colin Porlezza, in collaboration with Amnesty International, Associazione Ticinese dei Giornalisti, Corso di Giornalismo della Svizzera italiana, DIACOMET project, DIG Festival, Fondazione Diritti Umani, Reporter without borders Switzerland, SSM, Syndicom. Media partner: Radio Gwen.
