"USI in ascolto" celebrates its fourth anniversary
Institutional Communication Service
29 November 2024
The "USI in ascolto" service was launched in December 2020 during a particularly challenging time. This period not only coincided with the Christmas holidays, which are often difficult for those experiencing fragility but also took place amid the COVID-19 pandemic. As the service marks its fourth anniversary, Rosalba Morese, the Contact Person for "USI in ascolto," and Margherita Luciani, a collaborator, discuss this important platform available to the Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) community.
Who is "USI in ascolto" intended for, and who was it designed for?
"USI in ascolto" is a free, individual listening space. It is not a psychotherapy course, nor does it serve as clinical counselling. This space is open to all members of the USI community, including students, faculty, and administrative staff, who may be facing a challenging situation. The innovative feature of this model lies not only in the opportunity for active (non-clinical) listening with individuals who have direct knowledge of USI and specific training but also in its integration within the Equal Opportunities Service. This connection is crucial as it allows for broader support and facilitates more effective, functional, and timely management of situations. Additionally, "USI in ascolto" offers informational support regarding mental health and psychosocial services in the region".
The project originated during the COVID-19 pandemic. Now that circumstances have changed, have you noticed new needs and challenges among the people who come to you?
"The COVID-19 pandemic has led to increased feelings of discomfort, loneliness, social isolation, and psychosocial distress. In response to this challenging time, the Università della Svizzera italiana established "USI in ascolto" through its Equal Opportunities Service. This initiative provides a dedicated space for welcoming and listening to individuals in need.
We are currently in a post-pandemic period, which remains complex due to the international context marked by various armed conflicts. Our student body is diverse, encompassing many nationalities. This listening space is becoming an essential institutional resource, providing a dedicated environment to welcome and support all students who may be facing challenges, particularly those related to ongoing conflicts".
What benefits has this project provided to the academic community over the years, and what goals does it set for the future?
"Offering active listening to those facing difficulties is a vital way to foster a community that is attentive to people and their psychosocial well-being. This year, in collaboration with the Equal Opportunities Service, we have organised the first training course for the administrative body "Ben-essere a lavoro" (Well-being at Work), focusing on managing work-related stress, which will be repeated in 2025. Additionally, we plan to hold two awareness-raising events open to the public each year—one in each semester—addressing topics related to psychological well-being and social inclusion".
How can someone reach you throughout the year and during the holidays?
"USI in ascolto" is also active during Christmas, Easter and summer holidays. We would like to remind that its offer is in both Italian and English, with a strong emphasis on confidentiality. there are many channels to reach out to "USI in ascolto", For more information, please refer to the following link".
