Lecture series on Sciences and Science Communication

The Laboratory of Science Communication (LABCS) of the Faculty of Communication Sciences, with the support of the InterDisciplinary Institute of Data Science (IDIDS), organise at Università della Svizzera italiana (Lugano campus) a lecture series to provide on open forum on the development of science, by emphasizing the centrality of communicative processes for the development of science and for its interaction with the broader societal context, building therefore on contemporary work in sociology of science, which conceives science as a community of practice, embedded in a broader socio-political context.

Within this framework, the lecture series emphasises two central elements: first, the importance of (various forms of) communicative processes which glue together scientific communities and structure their interaction with society and politics and, hence, the potential for bridging science and technology studies and communication sciences. Second, the potential for empirical studies of science communication generated by a wider availability of data and analytic methods, including citation and co-word methods to analyse scientific fields and their communication flows and, more recently altmetric data and techniques to map communication flows within the scientific community and broader user contexts.

The first series of lectures includes four presentations between April and June 2017:
