Professor Marco Maggi of the Institute of Italian Studies comments on some pages of A month in Siena by Hisham Matar (Einaudi 2020), dedicated to a reading of the paintings of Palazzo Pubblico in Siena.

It is mostly in moments such as those we are experiencing, when our daily life gets turned upside down, that people need images capable of providing guidance, like the mandalas of the Oriental tradition.

In the recent volume A Month in Siena, the English-speaking Libyan writer Hisham Matar suggests some of them. Surprisingly, they are not works by contemporary artists, but by ancient painters, found in one of the cradles of Italian civilisation, Siena.
