Freshly recovered from a pandemic and its human and economic consequences, we have found war on our doorstep. In this near-perfect storm, the future no longer looks reassuring. From various parts of the world, we are witnessing the resurgence of totalitarian temptations, questioning the legitimacy of democracy as a desirable system. But, at the same time, we see men and women worldwide rising in opposition to inhumane social and economic conditions and to the limitations placed on individual freedom and freedom of speech.

Salil Tripathi, an Indian-born journalist and writer, has devoted his career to defending human rights. He has written three books and numerous articles in The Independent, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington, Post, The New Republic and many others. He is contributing editor at The Caravan. After living in Asia and Europe, he currently resides in New York. From 2015 to 2021, he served as Chair of PEN International’s Committee for Writers in Prison (WiPC) and is now on the organization’s international Board.
