The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings assess how dedicated academic institutions are to fulfilling the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) established by the United Nations in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda. Università della Svizzera italiana has been included in the rankings for the first time this year. Overall, USI has been placed in the 401-600 range amongst 1'600 universities, the second-highest position in Switzerland, following the University of Neuchâtel, and is on par with the University of Lausanne. For objective 17, which is considered particularly important for the ranking, USI is first in Switzerland.

"I am particularly satisfied with this result", emphasises Deputy Rector Lorenzo Cantoni, " as it is a measure of how well we collaborate and disseminate knowledge in favour of sustainable development, responsibly assuming the transformative role expected of universities".

Sustainable Development Goal 17 looks at the broader ways in which universities support the SDGs through collaboration with other countries, the promotion of best practices and the publication of data. Universities can substantially contribute to all three dimensions of sustainable development - environmental, social, and economic - through their education, research, and knowledge transfer activities. When it comes to individual goals, USI has been rated highly in four areas, with above-average scores in goal 3 (health and well-being) and 12 (responsible use of resources). Furthermore, for goal 16 (peace, justice and sound institutions), USI is ranked 201-300 out of more than 900 institutions, while for objective 17 (global partnership for sustainable development), which is considered particularly important for the ranking, USI is in the top 25% of the best universities (301-400 out of 1'600 universities) and first in Switzerland.
